The Goals of Team TN's trip to India

January 2014;  a group of Interact students and Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Knoxville, TN will travel to Chandigarh, India for 10 days. The goals for Team Tennessee are threefold;

1. To join with Rotary International's final National Immunization Days (NID) to eradicate polio in India. Our group will help administer polio vaccinations in the form of drops to children around the city. We'll assist with set-up, administration of the drops, and mop up afterwards. This will be the last year the NID will take place as India is expected to be declared polio free in February, 2014.

2. Our second goal is to volunteer at the Bal Bahar School in Chandigarh. Since 2009 Interact students have sent funding, toys, books and school supplies to this elementary school located in the slum district. The headmaster of the small school has used the donated funds to better educate the students and create a new kitchen providing hot, healthy meals for each student daily.

The funding has also helped to repaint the school and provide teachers with a good facility in which to educate under-priviliged boys and girls. Through education their hope is to break the cycle of poverty for many of the local families. Please take a look at this great video, linked below,  created by two Interact students  after their visit to the Bal Bahar School a couple of years ago.

3. And finally, our Interact students will spend a day visiting the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School. In April two students from this school visited Knoxville, TN and lived with host families during their two-week stay. They shadowed their host sisters and other members of Interact Club while attending classes. The Interact students will now have the opportunity to spend time at an Indian school and experience the day in the life of an Indian student!

We look forward to sharing our adventures and photos with you on this blog site. We'll try to update it daily to keep you up-to-date with our experiences. Watch this space!
